Fan Spotlight – Michael Rodman

For Michael Rodman, becoming a NASCAR fan happened at an early age (10) and he was a Dale Earnhardt Sr. fan because that was his dad’s favorite driver. And Rodman was lucky enough to meet Earnhardt Sr. in 1997.

So naturally, Rodman migrated to becoming a Dale Earnhardt Jr fan, but he’s followed Dale Jr. since 1998 when he was racing on the NASCAR XFINITY Series circuit.

As far as attending races at Kansas Speedway, his first race was in 2001 and the tickets were a Christmas gift (we completely agree that Kansas Speedway tickets make a good gift!). He’s only missed one race at the Speedway since then, and that was all the way back in 2005.

For Rodman, Kansas Speedway is about the racing and hopefully getting the chance to meet your favorite drivers and get autographs, but he’s also met two of his best friends at Kansas Speedway. Rodman met his friends in FanWalk in 2013 and they not only meet up at the races, but they are meeting up outside of the track to hang out as well.

If you’re a race fan and want to know how to get autographs, you definitely need to get the inside scoop from Rodman. He’s been collecting driver autographs since 2006 and has found prime real estate in Kansas Speedway’s FanWalk area. He says he brings a lot of diecasts to the track and has found drivers willing to sign along the fence in FanWalk as they head out to qualifying but also as they are headed to their media obligations during the weekend.

And as a Dale Sr. fan, Rodman’s prized memorabilia is a Dale Sr. autographed Wheaties diecast, which he signed the first time Rodman got to meet him. Another great memory for Rodman is when he met Dale Jr. and took a selfie with him!

Rodman echoes what we’ve heard a lot of fans saying – rent a scanner! It’s the best way to feel a part of the action because you can hear the driver and crew chief communicating throughout the race. He also recommends that if you’re looking for driver autographs, purchase a pre-race pass (Monster Energy NASCAR Cup Series day only) or a FanWalk ticket (non-Cup days). It’s the best opportunity to get autographs as drivers are headed to their various obligations of the weekend.

We started our Fan Spotlight feature to thank you, the FANS, for supporting racing at Kansas Speedway. If you would like to be featured in an upcoming Kansas Speedway Fan Spotlight, send an email to comments@kansasspeedway.com with the subject line Fan Spotlight, and you just might be next!
