Fan Spotlight: Steven Oxley

Every race fan has a story and Steven Oxley is no different. Oxley started following NASCAR in 1998 when his dad was watching a race from Bristol on TV and he joined him. His dad noticed Oxley’s interest and started taking him to a local (Kansas City-area) track, I-70 Speedway. They would attend races every Saturday night until the track closed and Oxley’s fandom grew from there.

However, it wasn’t until 2007 that Oxley first ventured to Kansas Speedway. His step-father won tickets to the NASCAR XFINITY Series race, and Oxley attended the race with his mother and he was hooked. He begged his mom for tickets to attend the Monster Energy NASCAR Cup Series race the following year (remember, Kansas Speedway only hosted one Cup race a year until 2011). Oxley has been attending every race since then, except for 2010 Cup weekend.

And as part of being a fan, Oxley has traveled to several NASCAR tracks, but he’s also supporting local racing, attending races at tracks in and around Kansas City.

He’s also definitely not short on stories and we were fortunate enough to hear a couple of them.

  • They both involve his favorite driver, Carl Edwards (we’re fans of him too!). Oxley has been fortunate enough to meet Edwards several times over the years and says that everything Edwards has done for Oxley and his mother is absolutely unforgettable – like how Edwards always remembers him. Edwards has signed a lot of autographs for Oxley and will say “Thanks Steven” during their interaction.

  • One year, Oxley and his mother were in the garage area and Carl walked by. Oxley’s mom talked to Carl and thanked him for everything he had done for Oxley and Edwards responded that Oxley was a good kid and his mom did a good job raising him.

  • Another story is recent, like last October recent. Edwards asked Oxley what he had been doing lately and Oxley responded (after a few seconds to get over the shock of the question) that he was about to graduate from Park University and was hoping to become a journalist. Edwards wished him success in chasing his dream. It’s definitely something Oxley will never forget.

One of his favorite memories is watching part of last year’s Hollywood Casino 400 from Edwards pit box. He says it was an unbelievable experience to be that close to everything, including the crew chief. He also has fond memories of watching Edwards win a race at Texas, something he had never experienced at a track until that race last year.

And while we all can’t have the experience of sitting on a pit box, we can all get closer to the action with a scanner and Oxley definitely recommends renting one during a weekend so you can hear the driver and their pit crews throughout the race.

We truly love meeting our Kansas Speedway fans and Oxley offered this up regarding Kansas Speedway’s staff.

“I’ve been fortunate enough to get to know some of the folks who work at Kansas Speedway. From the president to weekend workers, each person I have met have been nice and caring to my mother and me. The things the Speedway staff does is amazing. For that, I want to thank the staff for all of it. I really truly appreciate it.”

Steven – we thank you for being a fan and supporting us here at Kansas Speedway.
