Truex takes home the wine bottle

For defending race winner Martin Truex Jr., it didn’t matter that the layout of Sonoma changed this year, adding the carousel for the first time since 1997. Truex held off teammate Kyle Busch through the last lap, though he saw his eight-second lead dwindle to just north of one second. Truex’s second consecutive win at Sonoma is his fourth of the season.
Truex was dominant throughout the day, leading 59 of 90 laps, including the final 24.
“I just dug down deep and tried to be smooth and hit my marks,” said Truex, who has won three times in his career at Sonoma, all with different owners. “Luckily I began with a big enough gap where I could get away and not feel too much pressure.”
Following Busch was Ryan Blaney, Matt DiBenedetto (whose fourth-place finish was a career best) and Denny Hamlin.
With the 2019 season entering its second half, drivers who have secured spots in the Monster Energy NASCAR Cup Series playoffs are Joey Logano (2 wins), Kyle Busch (4 wins), Brad Keselowski (3 wins), Martin Truex Jr. (4 wins), Denny Hamlin (2 wins) and Chase Elliott (1 win). Other drivers who are currently holding playoff spots are Kevin Harvick, Kurt Busch, Ryan Blaney, Alex Bowman, Aric Almirola, Clint Bowyer, Daniel Suarez, William Byron, Kyle Larson and Ryan Newman.
The Monster Energy NASCAR Cup Series returns to action this weekend at Chicagoland Speedway.
