2007 Cup Preview

When fans attend a race at Kansas Speedway, they know they're holding a ticket to a history-making event. Whether the winner is coasting in for the victory, ending a winless streak that seemed to go on forever or fighting off the competition in one of the closest finishes in series history, everyone knows the last lap will be exciting.

The NASCAR NEXTEL Cup and Busch Series events are once again coming to Kansas Speedway, a track that is building quite a reputation for having exciting and dramatic finishes to its racing events.

In 2006, Tony Stewart won the NEXTEL Cup Series event on fumes. He took a gamble with his fuel mileage and it paid off. Although Stewart ran out of gas in turn 2, he had a big enough lead over the second place car of Casey Mears to take the win after coasting the rest of the way around the track. After crossing the finish line, Stewart was unsure of how things had turned out - and his crew chief, Greg Zipadelli, was sending mixed messages over the team radio.

"He was screaming so loud I thought we had lost the race," Stewart said of Zipadelli. "It wasn't until I got all the way around to the first turn that I knew we had won."

Kansas Speedway has also become a good place for racing veterans to end long winless streaks. In 2005, Mark Martin won the NEXTEL Cup Series event, ending a 52-race drought. Terry Cook won the NASCAR Craftsman Truck Series race in 2006, ending a 94-race winless streak of his own.

"Man, this is huge," Cook said after his win. "I was trying to get my knees to stop knocking. It's been so long."

Drama-filled finishes are not exclusive to stock car racing at Kansas Speedway. The IndyCar Series has had some of its closest finishes at the 1.5-mile tri-oval.

The track holds the record of second closest margin of victory with Buddy Rice beating Vitor Meira by 0.0051 seconds in 2004.

The track has also played host to the second closest 1-2-3 finish with Tony Kanaan beating Dan Wheldon (second) and Vitor Meira (third) by 0.0242 seconds in 2005.

Kansas Speedway is tied for second with most races, five, with a margin of victory less than a second in the IndyCar Series.

Kansas Speedway is quickly becoming a driver favorite because of the ability to race all over the track, but it is becoming a fan favorite because of the non-stop action from beginning to end.

Don't miss your chance to see all of the exciting racing action at Kansas Speedway on Sept. 29th and 30th. The weekend is sure to be one for the record books.
