Kansas City Native Wins NASCAR Humanitarian Award, Kansas Speedway Matching $100,000 Donation
During the NASCAR Sprint Cup Series Awards last week, Kansas City native Don Post was awarded the Betty Jane France Humanitarian Award for his contributions to charities throughout Kansas City, and specifically his work with March of Dimes Kansas City’s Bikers for Babies program which is held annually at Kansas Speedway. For Post’s efforts, March of Dimes Kansas City will receive a $100,000 donation from The NASCAR Foundation.
But it doesn’t stop there. After Post was announced as the award recipient, Kansas Speedway President Patrick Warren decided Kansas Speedway would match The NASCAR Foundation’s donation of $100,000 to March of Dimes Kansas City.
“Don is an inspiration to not only those that know him, but to the people he helps on a daily basis,” said Warren. “I’m honored to be able to match The NASCAR Foundation’s $100,000 donation to help March of Dimes Kansas City continue on their mission to help ensure the health of babies in our community.”
In 1980, Post’s life was forever changed when he was diagnosed with Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis, also known as ALS or “Lou Gehrig’s Disease,” and was told he only had three to five years to live. He retired from his professional job, and despite the ALS diagnosis, he embarked on a 33-year mission of donating his time and talent to charities in the Kansas City metropolitan area.
Post has served on boards of directors and executive committees for a number of non-profit organizations and mentored many young children diagnosed with muscular dystrophy. He has been a member on the March of Dimes “Bikers for Babies” motorcycle ride committee for 12 years, and has been the event’s chairman since 2010.
Post was chosen the winner from four finalists through a national fan vote on NASCAR.com, which saw a record number of fan votes this year.
