GRAND-AM ROAD RACING TEAMS TESTING AT KANSAS SPEEDWAY – DAY ONE
As GRAND-AM Road Racing teams ventured to Kansas Speedway today for their first look at the new 2.37-mile road course, chilly temperatures greeted them as they prepare for the first GRAND-AM event at the facility, which is scheduled for August 16-17, 2013.
The cold temperatures haven’t affected 2012 Rolex 24 at Daytona winner Ozz Negri, though, as he led all three practice sessions for the Rolex Sports Car Series today. In the first practice, he had a fast time of 121.222 mph and in the second session, he clocked in at 121.863. Negri’s time in the second session was .623-second faster than Joao Barbosa, who won the 2010 Rolex 24 at Daytona. In the final session, he had a time of 123.080 mph, which was the day’s overall fastest lap.
For Roush Performance, Kansas Speedway must be to their liking as the team led each of the Continental Tire Sports Car Series Challenge three practices today. The morning session was led by Shelby Blackstock, son of actress/singer Reba McEntire, at 101.819 mph. The second session was led by Billy Johnson, who clocked in at 103.424 mph. Johnson increased his speed in the final session and led that one as well, with a speed of 104.339 mph. (A note of interest on Johnson – in 2011, he filled in for Carl Edwards in a NASCAR Nationwide Series race at Road America.)
Testing continues tomorrow at Kansas Speedway for both series at 9 AM and is scheduled to continue until 4:45 PM and is free to the public. Fans can watch from the infield by entering on France Family Drive and parking in the designated infield parking or watch from Hospitality Village by entering at Michigan Drive, parking in Lot 6 and entering at Gate D.
