With 25 laps to go, Carl Edwards bumped past points leader Clint Bowyer on Saturday to earn his first Nationwide Series win this season.
Edwards, a Columbia, Mo. native, took the lead from Bowyer, an Emporia, Kans. native, after contact initiated by the No. 60 car turned Bowyer sideways.
“I didn’t want to pass Clint that way,” Edwards said. “I got underneath him and hit him.”
After reclaiming the lead from Bowyer, Edwards had to hold off hard-charging rookie Joey Logano, who held the lead for most of the race before the final round of pit stops sent him back to fourth.
Edwards came from 11th place to take the checkered flag, while Bowyer started the race in the sixth place position.
“We got up to where we needed to be, and unfortunately it got taken from us,” Bowyer said.
Bowyer’s post-race comments revealed his displeasure with Edwards’ move, indicating a possible payback. Edwards knew Bowyer’s shot at revenge would come soon, as both drivers were scheduled to compete the very next day in the Sprint Cup race at Infineon Raceway.
“As long as Clint’s not too mad and we don’t have to race around him, we’ll be all right,” Edwards said.
Both drivers fared well in Sunday’s race with top 10 finishes. Bowyer had the last laugh though; his fourth place finish put him five spots ahead of Edwards.
Bowyer’s performance on Sunday moved him into 10th place in the Sprint Cup points standings, while Edwards remained in his fourth place spot.
Bowyer and Edwards look to make their way back home to the Midwest when Kansas Speedway hosts the third race in the Chase for the Sprint Cup on September 28.
While the two local drivers compete on the racetrack each weekend throughout summer and fall, their favorite college sports teams will be doing the same. Bowyer can be seen wearing the crimson and blue of the Kansas Jayhawks while Edwards has been known to support the heated rival Missouri Tigers.
