IRL IndyCar Series drivers Jeff Simmons and Vitor Meira will pump ethanol-blended fuel for $2.20 a gallon Thursday at Casey's General Store, 15441 Wolf Creek Parkway in Basehor, Kan.
$2.20 a gallon!
The lower-priced fuel will only be available from 11:30 a.m. to 1 p.m. Thursday.
The Indy Racing League has taken a major role in promoting the use of ethanol-blended gas. The race cars of the IRL IndyCar Series, at Kansas Speedway this weekend for the Kansas Lottery Indy 300, run on a 10 percent blend of ethanol. Next year, the series will move to full ethanol.
Simmons races for Rahal Letterman Racing, which is owned by retired driver Bobby Rahal and television talk show host Dave Letterman. Meira drives for Panther Racing.
Ethanol is a grain alcohol largely derived from corn. It is viewed as a more cost-effective and environmentally friendly fuel source than fossil fuels.
